Four Natural Stone Walkway Styles

Irregular Flagstone

Natural stone pieces fitted together like a puzzle. Set in sand with open joints filled with ground cover or polymeric sand. The most organic, natural-looking option available.

Cut Flagstone

Flagstone cut to consistent sizes and laid in a pattern. Cleaner and more formal than irregular stone, with tighter joints that resist weeds and give a more structured appearance.

Stepping Stones

Individual stones spaced for a relaxed, garden-path feel. Set slightly below lawn grade so a mower can pass over them. Great for informal routes through landscape areas.

Decomposed Granite (DG)

Crushed granite compacted into a firm, permeable surface. Bordered with steel or stone edging. Low cost, low maintenance, and perfectly at home in the Central Oregon desert aesthetic.

Hardscape and landscape integration

Set Right, Stays Right

Natural stone walkways look effortless, but installing them well takes skill. Stones need to be set at a consistent height so there are no trip hazards. They need a base that doesn't allow individual stones to sink, tilt, or shift in wet conditions. And they need to be pitched to drain water off the surface rather than pooling in the joints.

We also pay attention to how the stone will interact with the surrounding landscape, whether it's set in grass, mulch, gravel, or ground cover affects how it should be installed and what edge treatment is appropriate.

  • Compacted base under every stone to prevent sinking
  • Consistent surface height, no trip hazards
  • Drainage pitch built into every install
  • Edging options: steel, stone, or landscape border
  • Ground cover options for joints: thyme, phlox, moss, DG
