The Right Way to Install Pavers

Pavers are one of the most versatile and durable hardscape materials available, but only when installed correctly. A paver job done without proper excavation, base compaction, or edge restraints is a paver job that rocks, sinks, and spreads within two or three winters in Central Oregon.

As a certified paver installer, Chace McHone follows industry-standard installation procedures for every project, from a small garden path to a full driveway. That means the right depth, the right materials, and the right finish.

  • Driveways, concrete or clay pavers in herringbone, basket weave, running bond patterns
  • Patios, square, rectangular, or tumbled paver styles
  • Walkways and paths, residential and commercial
  • Pool surrounds and hardscape borders
  • Polymeric sand joints, locks pavers, resists weeds and ants
  • Plastic or steel edge restraints spiked into base
  • Optional sealer application for UV and stain protection

How We Install Pavers

Every paver project follows the same proven process, no shortcuts, no skipped steps.

1

Excavate & Grade

We dig to proper depth (6 to 10" depending on use), remove all organic material, and establish drainage slope.

2

Compact Base

Road base gravel is installed in lifts and compacted with a plate compactor to create a solid, stable foundation.

3

Lay & Cut Pavers

Pavers are laid in the chosen pattern, cut to fit at borders, and checked for level and consistency throughout.

4

Sand, Compact & Seal

Polymeric sand is swept in and activated, edge restraints secured, and optional sealer applied for long-term protection.

Certified Installer vs. General Contractor

Any landscaper with a truck and a saw can lay pavers. A certified installer knows the specific base depths required for driveways vs. patios, how much pitch to build in for drainage, how to properly activate polymeric sand, and how to maintain joint consistency across large areas.

Pavers are also one of the most repairable hardscape surfaces out there, if something ever shifts, you can pop out the affected pavers, fix the base, and reset them. You can't do that with concrete. That repairability only works if the original installation used proper edge restraints and base compaction.

Polymeric Sand, Why We Use It

Standard sand washes out, allows weeds to grow, and lets ants tunnel underneath. Polymeric sand hardens when wet, binding the joints permanently. It keeps pavers locked in place, prevents weed growth, and dramatically extends the life of the installation without adding much cost.
